What I learned from Toastmasters in 2018 - about telling stories grandmother and Halloween

I went to a workshop at Sinha promoting club growth.
Tay told us that in house clubs are not successful if you have fewer than 30 employees because you cannot muster the 10-29 members needed for club meetings. Aim at businesses empolying 10,000 empolyees, with offices worldwide.

In September I went to Star Millennium Toastmasters at Cairnhill Community Club.

The visitor from Nee Soon East evaluated a speech containing three stories. One was about a grandmother and that story was last. She suggested that everybody had a grandmother so that story should come first.

The other two stories should relate to the first. All three stories should be linked. "Without suggesting that you should in any way create a fiction," she said, "Perhaps you could suggest that your grandmother left no material goods, only good memories."

Relate her and her lack of possessions to the story about the man, Dr Richards, who was wealthy but when he suddenly got lung cancer realized that his friends and family mattered more than all his material possessions.

Halloween At Senja-Cashew (October 24)
The screen at the back of the room is used for projecting the agenda. the theme is Halloween. Wear orange  (or orange and green? - that rhymes). I sent a what's ap message to say I was attending, or rather tho check the meeting was on.

The theme was Halloween and when we went round the table giving introductions to ourselves, sometody had said that if she had known the dress code was Halloween she would have worn something appropriate. I thought the same. I was in Daeso where a huge number of Halloween items were on available. I din't bother to look at them, didn't think they were relevant.

What can I do? Now I can dress all in orange to fit the theme, just in case. Some clubs offer an award for the best dressed.

HALLOWEEN AT HARROVIANS

It was a brilliant themed meeting.

LESSONS LEARNED
Maybe add to the next committee meeting to discuss

1 Mentoring - My sessión did not allow every group to give feedback. Maybe we could send around a request for feedback.

2 I could have brought a prop or piece of clothing if I’d thought about it. Next year we could suggest everybody wears something related to Halloween or filing that black or white or orange, anywhere, or around the neck and give everybody an orange paper napkin to hold or wear, or a piece of orange ribbon.
Regarding newcomers doing roles. I think it would help them if we did one of these things.

3 GRAMMARIAN
Include on the programme sheet for TME to read out and instruction such as:
a)The Grammarian does three things: gives us the word of the written on the clipboard by the SAA; gives one hint on grammar;
b) Provide a dictionary and/grammar book for the grammarian to use.

4 TIMER
A hint to the timer: The Timer demonstrates the lights, tells us the time for speeches and evaluations and roles, and says why time is important.
( In the club box: Three quotations about time printed for the timer to choose one read and hold it up for pin it on the clipboard.

5 TOPICS MASTER
The topics master chooses one experienced member and then offers opportunities to two guests or members not on the programme a chance to speak.
(A box of items or quotations for the topics master. Or a series of cards, say 5
The books which helped you in your job: add best, worst, memorable,
your best advice on choosing a career; add best, worst, memorable
the best company you have worked for; add second best, worst, memorable,
the best service you’ve had from a shop, restaurant or business; add equally good, a disaster, I wish I’d said ...
Your best tip on cooking, cleaning or gardening. add best, worst, I wish I’d said.

It was a great meeting. Keep up the good work. Well done and thanks to President Sushil, and Indra and Amparo for the food and decorations and decor.
