Voice of Experience - Mayor or Mayoress?

I am calling our visitor the Mayor, as it appears that calling her Mayoress would demote her. Regarding the title Mayor and Mayoress, I recall that although language teachers such as Lorna and I would like a man to be a Mayor and a woman to be a Mayoress, we were in previous years told that (presumably) to avoid confusion, because in the old days the Mayor was the title holder, whilst the Mayoress was his partner ( - a subsidiary role, with no official role, and no chain - a different chain, nor office - a subsidiary office), today the title is Mayor, whether the person is a man or woman, and their partner is called the Mayoress. Is this the case? Could whoever has the correspondence from the mayor’s office please check correct title for our photo captions. on second thoughts I’ll speed the process by doing it myself.
